DEBRECEN, Hungary 🇭🇺

We are in Debrecen, Hungary. As Hungary’s second-largest city, Debrecen is an important cultural and economic center with a population of approximately 200,000 people. Debrecen is known for its historical and cultural attractions, though the distance from Budapest makes it less visited by tourists.

Debrecen is home to the world’s first agricultural university, which was founded in 1818. It is also known for its spicy sausages, called “Debreceni kolbász,” which are a popular local delicacy.

In terms of the city’s history, Debrecen has played a significant role in Hungary’s past. It was the site of the country’s declaration of independence in 1849, and it also served as the temporary capital during WWII. However, it has faced some challenges in recent years, as it sometimes appears that the city has not kept up with the development seen in Hungary’s capital Budapest. Still, it is a buzzing city with a cozy atmosphere.

We start our tour in the city center. There are several sights to see like the Great Reformed Church, a large Protestant church that is the symbol of the city. The church was built in the early 19th century and is a significant landmark. We continue to walk all around and get a good overview north and south of the city center before we end our one hour tour right where we started.
