Description

Let's go for a walking tour through Leipzig, Germany, the largest city in Saxony.

Starting inside the grand Leipzig Hauptbahnhof, one of Europe's largest train stations, we walk south into the historic inner city.

Our first stop in the old town is the Nikolaikirche (St. Nicholas Church), famous as the starting point of the 1989 Peaceful Revolution, before the streets open up onto vast Augustusplatz to see the Leipzig Opera House, the Gewandhaus concert hall, and the tall City-Hochhaus skyscraper.

From Augustusplatz, our route leads to the central Markt square, framed by the Renaissance Altes Rathaus (Old Town Hall).

Following the green promenade ring for a few minutes, we visit the Gothic Thomaskirche (St. Thomas Church), known worldwide as the workplace and resting place of composer Johann Sebastian Bach.

We then walk through Leipzig's covered shopping arcades and historic merchant courtyards, including the Mädler Passage and Auerbachs Keller, before heading north to pass the Museum of Fine Arts and the Höfe am Brühl shopping mall.

The final stretch of our Leipzig city walk takes us down historic Hainstraße and through the tiled courtyards of Specks Hof.

After a second look at the inner city churches and a peaceful walk beside the Schwanenteich park pond, our loop finishes right back at Leipzig Central Station.
