Welcome to Maastricht - tucked into the southern tip of the Netherlands, just minutes from the German border.
Today is a rare day. The city is hosting the Heiligdomsvaart, which is a pilgrimage of relics that happens only once every seven years. But even without the procession, Maastricht has some interesting history. This is one the oldest city in the Netherlands, founded by the Romans over 2,000 years ago. It’s also the birthplace of the European Union - the historic Maastricht Treaty was signed right here in 1992.
On this walk, we’ll wind through narrow medieval streets, past more modern university buildings, and walk along stretches of the original city walls. We’ll pass ancient gates and towers, follow quiet paths, and finish up at the train station.
